The research within the project will show pejoration/amelioration of moral words by presenting the major facts of the change of meaning of Proto-Slavic moral words in Old Church Slavonic (OCS), as well as OCS moral words in modern Slavic languages (e.g., Proto-Slavic *dobrъ ‘courageous’ – cf. Old Czech dobrodruh ‘courageous companion’, dobrodružstvie ‘heroism’ > OCS ‘kind, good, nice’). In this respect, the research project will be successful if it can provide a number of specific pieces of information: a) it should determine dominant tendency of semantic change affecting words in OCS referring to pagan élites and their values; b) it should determine dominant tendency of semantic change affecting words from OCS referring to Christians and their values; c) it should provide a historical framework of these changes; d) it should reconstruct the logic behind these changes.
